1. Bird of prey group photo day
Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned amateur you’re sure to enjoy one of my
photographic days at The Suffolk Owl Sanctuary at Stonham Barns, Suffolk.
You will have the opportunity to photograph some of the UK’s most attractive birds without any glass or wire fences ruining the shot.
The day will begin with a short tutorial on photography, giving an insight into the techniques specifically used for wildlife photography. The main topics covered include advice on histograms, composition and focusing techniques as well as the basics of exposure and the relationship between aperture and shutter speed. This advice will be as brief as possible to allow for more time spent in the field working with the birds. There will be lots of information to absorb so feel free to ask as many questions as you like throughout the day regarding these techniques.
We will concentrate on 5-6 species with the emphasis on making the subject look as natural as possible. Each bird will be removed from its weathering (daytime quarters) and placed on suitable photogenic perches with every effort made to hide the jesses to allow for a ‘wild’ looking image.
In addition to the photos of static birds it may be possible to shoot some of the species on short flights. These flights can often be repeated several times allowing many opportunities to improve your technique to get a really special shot. Factors such as health, weather conditions and commitments to flying displays can affect the number of birds available for flights.
We will also join 2 or 3 of the public displays where a further 8 or so Worldwide species can be photographed in flight.
The birds used on the day for both flying and statics is subject to change and there can be no guarantee that a particular species will be available for use.
The centre’s species list from which our exclusive subjects will be chosen is subject to change but currently includes,
buzzard, kestrel, long-eared owl, great grey owl, ashy-faced owl and barn owl.
The group will comprise of a maximum of 8 to ensure everybody gets a great position for the close-ups.
Advice will be given for each new subject and tuition is available throughout, with many of the subjects positioned exclusively for you, allowing for some professional looking images and ensuring this is a memorable day out.
Dates for 2024 due to be announced at end of 2023.
