3. Minsmere
Minsmere, Suffolk, all year
Minsmere is the RSPB flagship nature reserve. It is famous for waders including the graceful avocet along with the reed bed specialties marsh harrier, bittern and bearded tit. It is perfectly positioned for migrant birds that pass through in spring and autumn and contains a wide variety of habitats which regularly attract around 220 bird species each year. Some of the photographic highlights for each season are listed below.
Spring: Black-headed gull breeding behaviour close to hide, Avocet, Waders in breeding plumage, Marsh harrier displaying, Bittern, Bearded tit, Nightingale singing, Dartford warbler, Hobby, warblers and other small birds at close range singing, passage migrants.
Summer: Black-headed gull breeding behaviour close to hide, Avocet possibly with chicks, Marsh harrier, Bittern on feeding flights, Bearded tit, Dartford warbler, Hobby, Terns.
Autumn: Avocet, Black-tailed godwit, Spotted redshank, Ducks, Swallow feeding chicks, Bearded tit, Marsh harrier, passage migrants
Winter: Wildfowl, Woodland birds.
The images opposite were all taken at Minsmere and although nothing is guaranteed with wildlife they give an indication to what can be achieved on the day. There is always something to photograph and I will endeavour to get you in positions to take professional quality images. At the very least you should end the day with the confidence and ability to take you photography to the next level in your future wildlife encounters.
Cost of Minsmere workshop
½ day ( approx 4-5 hours ) £95
A second participant can attend at half the above rates.
For non RSPB members there is a separate charge to enter the reserve.
